Wednesday 23 October 1996—Saturday 26 October 1996
Bye Bye Birdie bounces us straight back to the bobysox era. Yes, it’s the fifties and our hero has a problem. He’s about to be inducted into the U.S. Army. No more lamé suits. No more swiveling those famous hips. No more driving America’s teenagers into a frenzy with that singing voice which verges on a mumble.
Ah, Elvis! you might be thinking but you would be wrong. Conrad Birdie is the name of our hero and his manager, Albert Peterson and Albert’s faithful secretary, Rose Alvarez, have failed to fend off the evil day when Conrad will have to swap his glittering stage clothes for army fatigues.
For a last publicity stunt it is arranged that he will give a Farewell kiss to a representative teenager, on the Ed Sullivan Show. The fetching young lady chosen for this honour is fifteen year old Kim McAfee of Sweetapple, Ohio. When the news is broken, Kim’s family, her boyfriend Hugo and the whole of Sweetapple are caught up in events.
When Conrad arrives to mass swooning by the female population, reporters are everywhere and the TV show is chaotic. All this sparks a major rebellion with the kids defying their parents, Conrad escaping for a night away from Albert’s watchful eye and Rose rebelling against Albert’s eight year failure to propose by scandalising a solemn meeting of the local men’s club.
