Wednesday 21 October 1998—Saturday 24 October 1998
Lady Hadwell, a widow in financial difficulties, faced with the threat of losing her beloved stately home, has opened it to the general public in desperation. A visit from her old friend Mrs Connor, a wealthy American oil heiress, could not have come at a better time. If Mrs Connor’s son, Jack, were to fall in love with one of her daughters - Lady Charlotte, Lady Fiona or Lady Penelope - then Hadwell Hall would be saved.
Mrs Connor, it turns out, has similar plans. Tired of the models and actresses Jack has been dating, she is anxious for him to meet a nice English girl with good connections and a title. Who better than one of Lady Hadwell’s daughtersNULL Realising each others intentions, the old friends, who never miss a chance for a party, arrange for their offspring to meet at a ball in Hadwell Hall.
However, Mrs Connor is not the only one who shows interest in Lady Hadwell’s daughters.. Joe Studholme, the estate manager, has fallen in love with Lady Charlotte but doesn’t know how to tell her. To complicate matters further, he discovers he has won the football pools and is afraid that this new found wealth may come between them. Joe pleads with the Pools rep, Nicholas Wainwright to hold off any publicity until he finds out how Charlie feels about him. Wainwright reluctantly agrees, but only because the lovely Lady Fiona has given him good reason to stick around.
